About this site

AI Frontier is an independent publication about artificial intelligence—where it came from, what is happening now, and where it might take us next.

Artificial intelligence is moving incredibly quickly. Almost every week brings another new model, breakthrough, product, prediction, or claim about how AI is going to change the world.

Trying to make sense of all of it can be difficult.

Some developments really are important. Others are interesting but get exaggerated. And sometimes a confident prediction about the future of AI is simply that—a prediction.

AI Frontier was created to make that world a little easier to understand.

You don't need to be a programmer, researcher, or AI expert to follow along. The idea is to take important developments, look at the evidence behind them, and explain what actually changed and why it matters.

But understanding AI also means understanding where it came from.

Artificial intelligence didn't suddenly appear with ChatGPT. It grew out of a much longer story involving mathematics, logic, mechanical calculation, early computers, neural networks, decades of research, periods of disappointment, and eventually the enormous computing systems behind today's AI.

That's the story behind The Road to Artificial Intelligence, our 15-part series tracing the path from humanity's earliest attempts to preserve knowledge outside the mind all the way to transformers, foundation models, AI agents, and the systems being developed today.

AI Frontier will also follow what happens next.

That means looking at new models and agents, advances in computing, scientific applications, changes in industry, and other developments that could meaningfully change what artificial intelligence can do.

There will be plenty we don't know.

That's important too.

AI Frontier isn't interested in pretending that every impressive demonstration is a revolution, or that every company announcement should be accepted at face value. At the same time, skepticism shouldn't prevent us from recognizing when something genuinely important is happening.

The aim is curiosity without hype and skepticism without cynicism.

There's also an experiment happening behind the scenes.

AI Frontier uses artificial intelligence as part of its own research and editorial process. AI tools can help find stories, gather sources, compare claims, check information, and develop drafts. Articles then move through separate research, fact-checking, claim-review, and editorial stages.

But AI doesn't decide what gets published.

Every article requires human review and approval.

That's an important part of what AI Frontier is exploring: not how to remove people from research and publishing, but how people can use increasingly capable AI tools while keeping judgment, responsibility, and final decisions in human hands.

AI Frontier isn't here to convince you that artificial intelligence will save the world.

It isn't here to convince you that it will destroy it either.

AI is powerful, imperfect, rapidly changing, and becoming increasingly important in our lives. There are extraordinary possibilities ahead, serious questions to answer, and probably plenty of surprises none of us can predict.

That's what makes this worth following.

The Road to Artificial Intelligence

The best place to begin is The Road to Artificial Intelligence, a 15-part series exploring the long history that led to today's AI systems.

Start at Part 1 and follow the road from humanity's earliest attempts to preserve knowledge outside the mind to the questions surrounding the AI frontier today.
